My Bowed Psaltery and Mountain Dulcimer playing, tunes I'm working on playing on the Bowed Psaltery, and video by other people working on the same project. The Chromatic Streichpsalter I play was developed from some simple Kantle type box harp bowed even possibly with just a rosined stick with a scale only on one side. In "Germany" it became a much larger instrument called the Violin - Zither, it has the individually bowed strings and strings arranged as strum chords. So the short answer to your Question is "Germany" - but where? Before German Unification Germany itself was over 210 autonomous Kingdoms, Bishoprics, etc. Austria, Switzerland, and many other countries had large German minorities. The Bowed Psaltery is more popular today than its ever been and I've enjoyed playing it for over 50 years!

Earlier I put up a two bow version of this hymn tune, when learning a new tune I learn it first with one bow and make a video to practice up against. Wow, the resonance the bell tones is astonishing. I am familiar with bell tones from playing cello - they really sound like bells in the bowed psaltery. Just gorgeous!

Sounds great! I wonder if this is the same Cathy Traut that taught a few dulcimer classes back in '89-'90 at the Northridge, CA folk music festival...? I had some wonderful sheet music she brought, with little illustrations in the margins. Recently lost the binder they were in :(

Thanks for listening and your comments Roger. Hymn tunes are often named after a place such as where it was written or dedicated in honor of the composer or dedicated with the name of someone the composer knew. They then can become famously associated as the setting for a certain hymn song but still be used as the setting for many other hymns as well.

I have to admit I have never learned to read music - I find UA-cam"s speed controller the most helpful learning tool I've ever found. On any YT video run your pointer over the bottom and among other things a cog or snowflake icon appears, click it and speed control is one of the options, it allows you to slow or speed up but stay in pitch (at least sort of) and play to practice the tune phrase by phrase phrase. Otherwise Brenda Mangan and Gail Van Amberg have put together to best Bowed Psaltery book called "Psalt of the Earth - A Bowed Psaltery Book of techniques for Better Bowing with Music especially annotated for the Bowed Psaltery" You can reach Brenda through her email at manganbrenda@gmail.com

Beautifully played. Gregg-san! Thank you for playing the national anthem of Japan. Kimi-ga-yo means the era of Japanese emperor. It’s a shame that there are not a few people in Japan who believe it is not appropriate to make Koimi-ga-yo Japanese national anthem because of the emperor’s war responsibility in the World War II. Strangely, many Japanese people connect Kimi-ga-yo with extreme right, although it makes all of us proud to hear Kimi-ga-yo in international sports games and the Olympic Games. A couple of years ago, an idea was proposed that our bowed psaltery ensemble in Japan play Kimi-ga yo, but it did not realize because we were too afraid to be seen a group of extreme right. The incident reminded me of the CD Dave Holeton gave me when we visited the Bowed Psaltery Gathering in 2019. In one of his CD, the first song was The Star-Spangled Banner, which made me think that our attitude toward our national anthem might not be very healthy. Anyway, thank you again for your beautiful performance. Maybe you played Kimi-ga-yo in place of us. Nozomi

It is one of the things I as a complete amateur find interesting about hymn tunes having a "meter" that can be used to match them as a setting for many Hymns across many Christian denominations.

Great music, but are you sure this is Greensleeves? It sounds like What Child is This.
"What Child Is This?" is a popular Christmas carol written in 1865 by English writer William Chatterton Dix. At the age of twenty-nine, Dix was struck with a sudden near-fatal illness and confined to bed rest for several months, during which he went into a deep depression. Yet out of his near-death experience, Dix wrote many hymns, including What Child is This?, later set to the traditional English tune "Greensleeves". In many Hymnals the title of the Hymn Song is "What Child is This?'' (Greensleeves)
